Maura Mazzone: The Art of Capturing Fleeting Moments

A Passion for Preservation

Maura Mazzone, an Ohio-based photographer, has always been drawn to the idea of preserving moments that are easily lost to time. Though photography is not her full-time profession—she works as a photographic technician—it has become a lifelong passion. For Maura, photography serves as a “ticket back” to cherished memories. "When I look at a picture, I always remember the moments leading up to it, or what happened that day. It’s fun to sit and reminisce," she says. Her love for photography comes from her desire to capture the beauty of fleeting moments before they slip away, something she’s been doing for the past 13 years.

The Right Tools for the Job

Maura’s equipment plays a crucial role in bringing her artistic vision to life. She relies on the Sony a7III and a7R IV, two mirrorless cameras that give her the flexibility and speed needed for portrait photography. Her favorite lens is an 85mm, a perfect fit for capturing detailed, intimate portraits with a smooth, creamy background. "The 85mm lens allows me to focus on my subject with precision, making portraits feel personal and impactful," she explains. Her preference for mirrorless cameras is rooted in their lightweight design, which helps her stay nimble during shoots while still achieving the sharpness and quality she desires.

A Love for Portraits

Portraiture is where Maura’s heart lies. She loves the challenge of capturing not only the physical features of her subjects but also their emotions and personalities. "Portraits are so special because they tell stories. You’re not just photographing a person—you’re capturing a moment in their life," Maura reflects. Whether she's working with friends or professional models, she thrives on creating a connection that allows her to photograph her subjects in a way that feels authentic and true to who they are.

A Favorite Shoot in Hawaii

When asked about her most memorable shoot, Maura can’t help but smile as she recalls a trip to Hawaii. "Every day was a new opportunity for creativity," she says, referring to her experience shooting alongside one of her best friends and favorite models. In the paradise of Hawaii, Maura found herself surrounded by stunning landscapes and new inspiration. The shoot allowed her to experiment, grow, and have fun in ways she had never expected. "It was an unforgettable experience—working with someone I trust, in a place so beautiful, was the perfect combination."

Dream Destination: Italy

If Maura could shoot anywhere in the world, it would be in Italy. "I would love to do fun, creative portraits in the quaint villages of Italy," she says. The charm of these small towns, with their cobblestone streets and old-world architecture, would provide the perfect backdrop for her signature portrait work. The thought of blending her passion for photography with Italy’s picturesque beauty excites her, as she imagines how it would elevate the emotional depth of her portraits.

Gratitude for the Journey

Maura is quick to acknowledge the important role her models have played in her growth as a photographer. "I truly couldn’t have grown without my models," she says, expressing her gratitude for their time, trust, and support. Her creative journey has been shaped by their willingness to collaborate and explore new ideas, and for that, she is deeply thankful.

In a world that moves so quickly, Maura Mazzone’s photography offers a moment of pause. Through her lens, she preserves life’s most precious memories—reminding us all of the beauty in moments that may otherwise go unnoticed.
